Medicine Wheel

Buffalo Run Tipi Village is home to a traditional medicine wheel. The Wheel is 50 feet in diameter and delineates the winter and summer solstices, the vernal and autumnal equinoxes, and is aligned to the North Star, Polaris. The Wheel functions as an astronomical calendar, used by Lakota people to let them know when it was time to perform certain ceremonies and when other important events needed to take place. The Wheel has a symbolic meaning and is used as a teaching tool to promote health and well-being. Non-Indians and Indian guests experiencing the Wheel will learn about Lakota Star Knowledge and how it governed Lakota life on a daily basis.
