How we came to be...

The idea started back in 1994 when the Cultural Director of the Buffalo Run Tipi Village, Les Ducheneaux, was employed as the manager of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Buffalo Program. Drawing on his experiences as a spiritual leader, he envisioned a place where tribal youth would have an opportunity to experience Lakota culture and spirituality to assist them in confronting many of the social ills that Native people face today.
Firmly believing that education is the cornerstone to bringing forth a generation free from alcohol, drugs and poverty, Mr. Ducheneaux seeks to instill in our youth an understanding and appreciation for the rich history and culture of Lakota people. Through the creation of the Buffalo Run Culture Camp, and utilizing the teachings of the sacred Medicine Wheel, Lakota youth will have just such an opportunity today.
We also envision the Buffalo Run Tipi Village to be an indispensible tool for bringing economic development to the people of Cheyenne River. The influx of visitors will provide jobs and greatly needed revenues to this chronically depressed area.
